Update #1 from Africa!!!!

Hello everyone!! I am doing this update from the Harper's home on the hilltop at Bethel center. We are blessed here with an absolutely priceless view of the Indian Ocean. This is a peaceful place where you can feel the presence of God all around. We are settling into the routine here (not that there really is a routine) bit by bit. Here is a quick update of our time here so far (quick so I don't lose the internet connection before I publish!).

Days 1-3:

Had an interesting time getting here. A delayed flight to Atlanta left us with just minutes to catch our connecting flight to Johannesburg. Luckily we are a fleet group and got on board just in time. Upon arrival at JoBurg we were informed that our flight to Mozambique was overbooked, so we would need to stay overnight to catch a flight in the morning. We were pretty crabby about that whole matter until we arrived at the very nice hotel (paid for by the airline) and had a very nice meal (also paid for by the airline). We were also fortunate to meet a couple of other Americans, Amy and Stephanie, who also got bumped off of the flight. The next morning we caught our flight to Maputo and fortunately found our bags that had gone ahead the night before on our original flight (a absolute miracle in my mind - praise God!). From there we met Mark Harper at the airport where he informed us that his car was broken down and in the shop. I am now keenly aware of how blessed we are in America to have reliable, working vehicles as it seems to be a rarity here. We spent some time in Maputo - having lunch at the home of an American couple who spend several months in Moz, and getting groceries at the suprisingly well-stocked Shop Rite. Maputo is an interesting, bustling city -- a bit on the rough side, with shacks and rubble everywhere, but also many signs of modernization (both good- nicer schools for example, and bad - a significantly increased traffic problem). We finally hitched a ride with a youth group from South Africa for the long drive to Xai Xai and Bethel center. 48 hours, dozens of security check points and thousands of pot holes after our departure from Minneapolis, we arrived at our destination. The beautiful Bethel Center - where we had a nice meal and very good sleep!

Day 4

The day started early with our team's prayer and devotion time at 6:30am, followed by a breakfast of green oatmeal and coffee - both surprisingly delicious.

I immediately got the sense of the do-it-yourself nature of living out here when Mark asked if I, because I am a horse person, would be willing to help perform a little surgery on his horse who has a nasty growth on his leg. Catching the horse will be another story.

After a quick inspection of the horse, and determining that surgery performed by me, a non-vet with no medical experience, might not be the best option, we got to work on our project for the day -- window repair and installation. Half of the battle here is locating the proper tools for the job, and improvising when there aren't any. After some initial mishaps - including a gashed thumb for me, and sliced hand for Mary Lou (we are fine!) we got into a groove and finished replacing and caulking about half the windows in the girls' dormitory building.

After a full day of work we took a quick walk to get a better view of the beach, followed by a campfire cookout of Voorst (like brats) and marshmallows -a little like home for me! We also enjoyed time with Mark, listening to stories of he and Les' mission work and the trials faced by the Mozambican people. It is so moving to get a glimpse into their life and work, and feel like we get to be a small part of something much bigger than ourselves here.

Day 5

We are planning to finish the windows today, along with a few small painting projects. We are hoping for the opportunity to go into the community the next few days in the "bush" to work with the children at the school there. We see what the plan is as each day comes, so we will know more tomorrow.

All in all, we are so happy and blessed to be in this magnificent place serving the Lord and getting the chance to connect with Him and his people. Hopefully I will get the chance to post more updates soon!

God Bless!!

Thanks everyone!!

This will be my final post before we leave this Saturday for Africa. Just want to say thank you to everyone who has been supporting our team through prayer and donations. We could not do it without you!!!

I understand the internet access is somewhat spotty at Bethel Center, but I will try to provide updates as often as possible. If necessary, a trip into Xia Xia for a visit to an internet cafe will hopefully provide access for at least a few posts while we are there. Plus I'm sure there will be lots more (pictures and stories) to come after we return.

Thanks again! Please keep praying for us!

Firming up plans and projects

T-minus 3 days and counting until departure to Mozambique!!
Craig has been in communication with Mark and Les in Africa as we try to get an idea of exactly what we will be working on, and what will be needed while we are there. The plans seem to be ever-changing and evolving, but we are all willing and able no matter what the ultimate tasks will be.
The first week the team will be busy doing some painting and window glazing at Bethel, as well as painting and making blackboards for the village schools. On the first Friday we will be part of the Christchurch Kids program in the village of Zacanha, where we will be giving out clothing to the orphans. We have purchased t-shirts and other clothing items to bring to the kids - as much as we can possibly fit into our collective luggage! Les will join us on the first Friday night at Bethel Center and we will be involved in building the school in Zacanha on the Saturday and Sunday. We will have a praise worship service in the new church/school on the Sunday morning in Zacanha. The total number of kids we will be catering to at the school is about 150.
The second week will visit some of the soccer clubs with Gito and Samuel. We are also bringing along several soccer balls to give to the clubs. The kids have a Bible study after the game / practice.

Additionally, we have discussed other work projects for Bethel (making curtains perhaps? hopefully minimal sewing skills are required in my case!). In addition we might be doing some teaching --working with kids from the area around Bethel. These things are somewhat TBD, but we are prepared with teaching materials and supplies in any case.
Again, the trip is in the Lord's hands, and we know he will put us in exactly the right place, with the right projects for His purposes. We are looking forward to serving Him!

Ministry and family news from Les

Date: Thu, 30 Jul 2009 05:37:09 -0700
From: lesharper

Great news! Yesterday We were able to pay all the staff, teachers and orphan supervisors, thanks to donations from visiting teams ! Last week 15 of 58 YFC youth volunteers accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour at Bethel ! Fantastic ! (Those that didnt respond to the gospel sadly stole 2/3 of the meat i had purchased for the next two teams !! - oh well, God's stuff and He will sort it out - we may have a more vegetarian diet tho :)Yesterday 12 people participated in the follow up Bible study we held at Manavene (Our local village). Many people raised their hands to accept Christ after the Jesus film on Tue night ! God is good !

Charles has managed to find a job at a local building supply, and has been accepted into University for next year at my old College ! Two big answers to prayer ! Please pray he also manages to land a student scholarship for which he has applied. Michael is doing well at school and is enjoying playing the keyboard for the Lighthouse youth group in Nelspruit. He is growing a lot spiritually and learning to stand boldly for Christ at his school. He is doing rock climbing as a school sport this term. Praise God for the boys' grandparents staying with them most of the time both Mark and I have been away at Bethel and in the bush.

Team Bonding

We are in the final days leading up to our departure to Moz on the 8th. We decided to get together last week for a little team bonding time. Mary Lou and her husband Cecil graciously hosted us for a BBQ at their home. The food was delicious, and it was such a great time getting to know each other better and meet the spouses.

On Sunday we had our "commissioning" at church, where the team was introduced to the congregation and details of our mission trip were shared. We want to thank everyone from New Hope Church for your support and prayers.

Tonight we have our final official team meeting before we leave next week. Hopefully most of the details are figured out and questions answered by the end of our meeting. However, even if things aren't all figured out, or our plans need to shift, we know this is all in God's hands and the outcome of our trip will serve his purpose regardless of the details.

God Bless!

Praise and Prayer requests from Africa

From: Les Harper
Subject: Hrpers happenings june
To: Date: Monday, July 6, 2009, 11:45 AM
Dear praying friends,

Please forgive that this mail is short and without any pics - but i am writing from the most antiquated computer, in an internet cafe in Chibutu. I keep losing the connection .... ngmpfff !

Just wanted you to praise the Lord with us ! After 3 long years a truly STUNNING cement slab with steel undergirding is now covering our library at Bethel !

9 believers from the original community Bible Study of Joao, have just been baptised in Chinangue (Where only 2 years ago there was no church and no known believers !)

We were able to give out about 50 skirts to orphan and vulnerable girls in Mbanguine and Campo mark villages ! Praise God !

The two VERY needy 8 and 11 yr old orphan girls who lived in the bush and were literally starving, are coming to live at hope house with their baby niece of 15m. They ran away the first time, as the buildings were too strange and scary for them. Please pray that the love of Jesus reaches them and that they choose to stay this time.

We have a stunning new school cum church in Mbanguine village even complete with lockable school trunk and materials and a newly planted orchard of 11 fruit trees ! Thank you Lord ! Thank you DREAM TEAM and Strooidak ! Lovely !

Please pray for one of our staff for whom we are trying to organise ARV's- hence being in Chibutu today ! Please pray for favour.

PLEASE pray for our Lord's provision - Bethel staff have not been paid for june yet, and though much building has been happening, very little has come in for teachers, ministry and building staff salaries ... but this is a test of all of our faith - so we look to the hand of our Lord - who opens His hand and we are ALL fed (As I read in my quiet time yesterday !)

Love you all and so thankful for your prayers and encouragment !

God bless you !

Love Les for Mark and the boys

PS PRAISE THE LORD ! Charlie is back from Malawi ! What a blessing to be together again, till he goes off to study psychology - Christian counseling- teaching Biology at University of Johannesburg, where he will be in AFSLAAN men's res. He has applied for a bursary thru the government ed dept for which we covet your prayers ! :)

Things are starting to come together

The team is working on various details for the projects we will be involved in on our trip.

Laurie has been mapping out the lesson plans and gathering teaching materials for the week we will be teaching English to teenagers from Xai Xai. Not only is Laurie fluent in Portuguese (the language of Mozambique), she is an ESL teacher (English as a second language), so her skills will be of incredible use on this trip! So far, Laurie has developed a theme for each day of teaching (e.g. Feelings, parts of the body) with associated grammar lessons and activities. We will also be weaving in a simple biblical concept into each day of teaching.

Mary Lou has been coordinating the crafts and activities for the kids' camp we will be running for a few days on our first week in Moz. She seems to have endless ideas for keeping the kids busy! And since these kids live in an environment of extreme poverty, as do many in Moz, it will be great to be able to provide them with a fun, memorable experience, along with special crafts (like "gospel" bracelets) to take home.

Craig has been in contact with Mark Harper at Bethel Center to finalize the needs for the construction projects. We are purchasing materials to construct and install windows while we are there.

We are having another team meeting tomorrow, then only one more team meeting until we leave August 8th, so the trip is coming up fast!
